WCW Thunder was a professional wrestling program produced by World Championship Wrestling aired on TBS from January 8, 1998 to March 21, 2001. The rights of WCW Thunder now belong to WWE.
The success of the World Championship Wrestling main program, WCW Monday Nitro on TNT, led Ted Turner to create a new program, which would eventually be named Thunder, which would air on TBS on Thursdays.
WCW Executive Vice President Eric Bischoff was originally unwilling to produce another two-hour weekly program for a variety of reasons. First, Time Warner (WCW’s parent company) was under a season without hiring which prevented Bischoff from bringing additional production people to the program. Second, he felt that WCW did not have enough talent to produce another program and run the risk of overexposing them and making little significant storylines. Third, according to Bischoff, TBS refused to pay the cost of producing Thunder, which had an annual cost of between $ 12 million to $ 15 million.
